In 2014, while backpacking across Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, I stumbled upon the Yachting industry in a strange twist of fate. While sitting in the lobby of my hostel in Myanmar, I met a "Yachtie" who introduced me to the glamorous world of working on Superyachts.
I had just left a well-paid Engineering job and was on a journey of self-discovery, having realized earlier that year that I was unhappy with my life. I despised my corporate job, which paid well but did not fulfill me at all. After growing up as a first generation Latin American Immigrant taught to “chase the American Dream,” I felt incredibly lost and deflated. I had grown apart from my high school sweetheart and we were no longer compatible, yet the pressures of marriage loomed above.
I broke up with my long-term girlfriend of six years and escaped my life on a one-year backpacking trip around Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. This journey opened my eyes to a world of possibilities and allowed me to shed the false ideas and stereotypes that I had grown up with. And this is what led me to the meetup that forever changed my life.
I knew Superyachting could be my ticket to everything I wanted - a break from the 9-5 life that was slowly killing me, a job paying me to travel the world, financial freedom, and the story of a lifetime.
I spent several months preparing for this career change - obtaining the necessary certifications and ensuring that I was mentally ready for this new adventure. However, the reality of finding employment in the Yachting industry was much harsher than I anticipated. Despite being properly certified, I did not immediately receive the countless job offers I anticipated. It was just me against the world, and I felt frustrated and honestly, kind of scared.
It turns out it wasn't as easy as "take a few courses and start working onboard!"
The problem is I had learned how to get certified in the Yachting industry, but not how to get employed in the Yachting industry... and this is why most people fail. They're sold so many certifications and courses by the schools but they are not properly coached on how to successfully start working as crew.
